ART OF THE WESTERN WORLD {EPISODE 102}: A WHITE GARMENT OF CHURCHES: ROMANESQUE AND GOTHIC ART (TV)

Summary

One in this nine-part series exploring the history of western art. This program examines the Romanesque and Gothic styles of architecture during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Topics include the following: the revival of art and architecture during the eleventh and twelfth centuries; the return to large-scale architecture; the distinct characteristics of the Romanesque Pilgrimage Churches, such as rounded arches, barrel vaults, and massive walls; the work of the artist Gislebertus, the first person to sign his work; the rise of the monastic lifestyle with the fall of the Roman Empire; the monks' creation of a more advanced style of architecture; the "Gothic style," characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses (a mass of masonry built against a wall to strengthen it); the church of St. Denis in Paris, with its innovative design consisting of vast spaces, thin columns, and stained-glass windows instead of solid walls; the competition among cities to build their church towers higher then anyone else's; and how this competition was halted when the walls of a church collapsed on a choir, killing all of its members.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
