Summary
From the best-selling novel of the same name by Arlette Cousture (based on the life of her grandmother), this Canadian series, set in the lush countryside of central Quebec, follows the life of Emilie Bordeleau (Orsini), a young woman coming of age in the late 1800s. Emilie is the quintessential Quebec woman: a survivor who is strong-willed and unflinching in her beliefs. In the first episode of the 20-part series, 13-year-old Emilie is beginning to realize that as a woman, her interests will always come second to those of men. Caleb (Houde), her father, wants her to quit school and help her mother, but Emilie has always dreamed of being a teacher. Four years later Emilie has become a teacher; she tries desperately to maintain control of her classroom, but encounters resistance because she is the same age as some of her students. In French, dubbed in English.
