VIEWPOINT 90: CAMBODIA: THE BETRAYAL {A SPECIAL
REPORT BY JOHN PILGER} (TV)
Summary
In this documentary, filmmaker John Pilger returns to
war-torn Cambodia in 1990, one year after filming a
documentary that created a stir by depicting the support
of the West for the Khmer Rouge guerilla forces led by
Pol Pot. Upon returning, Pilger finds the conditions
even worse and the threat of the Khmer Rouge more
ominous. His attempts to track arms shipments to the
Khmer Rouge take him to Munich, Brussels, the U.S. State
Department, Singapore, and throughout Thailand. Among
those who discuss the threat of the Khmer Rouge and the
source of its money and arms are Frank Judd, director of
Oxfam (UK and Ireland); Raoul Jennar, former advisor to
the Belgian Senate; Tea Banh, vice premier and minister
of defence for Cambodia; Simon O'Dwyer-Russell,
diplomatic correspondent of the Sunday Telegraph
(London); Michael Sontheimer, Southeast Asia
correspondent for Die Zeit; Rep. Chester Atkins of the
U.S.; and Roger Normand, field work editor of the
Harvard Human Rights Journal. Kraisak Choonhavan,
foreign policy advisor to the Thai Prime Minister,
discusses the role of Thailand, and Onesta Carpene of
Australian Catholic Relief talks about the conditions in
Cambodia. As the program concludes, Pilger asks
viewers to demand accountability from their legislators
about the Cambodian situation.
(This program was awarded the International Emmy in
