CASANOVA, EPISODE 6: GOLDEN APPLES (TV)

Summary

In his six-part drama "Casanova," British author Dennis Potter strives to communicate the relevance of the 18-century libertine to a contemporary seventies audience. For Potter the historical character Casanova "was concerned with religious and sexual freedom, and these are the things we have to address ourselves to now." Much of the series is a complex intercutting between Casanova's amorous adventures and his confinement in jail, where he philosophizes on the nature of freedom. In the sixth and final episode, Casanova (Finlay) is in Germany, working as a librarian in a duke's castle. While writing his memoirs, he recalls his great escape he made from a prison in Venice with the help of a jailed priest (Hammond).
