BARBARA WALTERS SPECIAL, THE {PHIL DONAHUE AND MARLO THOMAS, KIRSTIE ALLEY, DAVID LETTERMAN} (TV)
Summary
One in this occasional series of interview specials, hosted by Baers. On this program, the guests are Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas, Kirstie Alley, and David Letterman. Highlights include: in the opening segment, Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas discuss the following topics, among others: if there is any misconception surrounding their eleven-year marriage; what they fight about as a couple, including the "little things"; reflecting on the second time Thomas appeared on "The Phil Donahue Show"; his first marriage and divorce; the memorial service and funeral for her father, Danny Thomas; the topics on his show and how Thomas feels about the brashness of some of them; what they have learned from each other; if there is still a romantic side to their relationship after years of marriage. In the next segment, Kirstie Alley talks about whether she gets along with her fellow cast members on "Cheers"; whether she'll stay on the show for one more season despite rumors of other cast members calling it quits; an explanation of the confession she made while giving her acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards; what she expected from her life when she was a child; how her cocaine addiction affected her life as well as people around her; being a member of the Church of Scientology; how she met Parker Stevenson and ended up marrying him; how her mother died the same day her career took-off after being cast in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn"; and her strong desire to try and have a baby after she suffered a miscarriage. In the final segment, David Letterman, who is normally very candid, discusses the following topics, among others: if he ever thought he'd be on television for ten years doing the same show; how they keep the show fresh night after night; why his very first appearance on "The Tonight Show" is the most memorable; being married in college and watching his marriage come apart after nine years; the crazy situation involving a woman who broke into his house claiming to be his wife; his feelings about why he wasn't chosen to replace Johnny Carson after his retirement; and if he'd like to stay with the same network or try and move elsewhere. Includes commercials and promos.
