ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE INVESTIGATION: THE KGB OSWALD FILES (TV)
Summary
One in this series of nightly news programs. Ted Koppel hosts this program, which explores reporter Forrest Sawyer's discoveries when he analyzed the KGB files on Lee Harvey Oswald. The Soviet intelligence bureau files concern Oswald's personality, his defection to the Soviet Union, and the two and a half years that he spent in Minsk before returning to the U.S. According to Sawyer, the KGB thought Oswald was an "unstable, incompetent dolt" without any valuable intelligence. Additionally, Oswald's neighbors and co-workers doubt his ability to mastermind the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Topics discussed include Oswald's suicide attempt, his dubious firearm skill, his growing dissatisfaction with Soviet society, and his marriage to Marina Oswald, who appears in still photos. Reporter Daniel Schorr comments that Sawyer's findings reflect the information that Soviet defector Yuri Nosenko offered in 1964, which was ignored by the Warren Commission. Although she refuses interview requests, Oswald's widow reportedly now disavows her Warren Commisssion testimony; she believes that her late husband was not a lone assassin.
