ABC MONDAY NIGHT MOVIE: CHINA BEACH: HELLO GOODBYE {SERIES FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The final episode in this drama series set during the Vietnam War, which focuses on the lives of the women stationed at China Beach, a combined U.S. Armed Forces hospital and USO recreational facility located near the South China Sea. This special two-hour finale centers around a reunion of China Beach veterans in Ohio, in 1988. When McMurphy and her family arrive at the reunion, the first people she runs into are Boonie Lanier and his family, plus Dr. Richard and his young wife Colleen. Boonie's daughter Karen is filming and interviewing the veterans present at the reunion, and as the veterans reminisce, the episode flashes back and forth between 1988 Ohio and wartime Vietnam. The first interviews with McMurphy, Dr. Richard, and Colleen tell the story of how Dr. Richard met and married his wife; Dr. Richard also expresses the sentiment that serving in Vietnam was a positive experience because of the meaningful work of saving lives and the intense friendships that were formed. This portion includes scenes of an operation by Dr. Richard and McMurphy on a badly wounded Dodger. In her interview, Wayloo echoes Dr. Richard's sentiments, saying that she is grateful for her experiences in Vietnam, and clips are shown of her documentary reports in China Beach. Sarge and Lila each reminisce about their romance in China Beach, and the scene flashes back to their engagement. As the party comes to an end, Boonie suggests that the group drive to Washington, D.C., to visit the Vietnam War Memorial. During the drive to D.C., Karen asks McMurphy about her absent mother, K.C., and McMurphy thinks back on the one soldier she met at China Beach whom she will never forget, as well as the transition of coming home to the U.S. When they reach the Capitol, Boonie goes to see K.C. about Karen, and the group shares a moment at the Memorial. Finally, the situation with K.C. and Karen comes to a climax, and McMurphy goes back to the Memorial to pay tribute to the soldier she cannot forget. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements, plus an ABC News Brief with Forrest Sawyer. Includes a promo with Suzanne Sommers for "Into the Night," and a public service announcement with John Denver for The National Arbor Day Foundation.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by John Sacret Young, 1998.
