THIRTYSOMETHING: A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about the personal and professional dilemmas confronting a close-knit group of friends -- urban baby boomers in their thirties -- living in Philadelphia. In this episode, Michael confronts unpleasant truths about the advertising game when he is forced to fire an actor from a beer campaign after the actor attends a demonstration protesting the Persian Gulf war. Wracked with guilt and stress, unable to sleep, and plagued by hallucinations inspired by the beer campaign, Michael flounders in a futile attempt to reconcile the client's gung-ho patriotism with his own liberal ideals. A chilling conversation with his draconian boss and mentor Miles Drentell brings Michael's hypocrisy and self-delusion into focus as the master manipulator explains the inherently amoral and dishonest nature of the advertiser's art. Michael is shaken to the core as he faces a decision that will enable him to define himself -- or cost him everything. Includes commercials, promos, public service announcements, and an "ABC News Brief" with anchor Barry Serafin.
