AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: THE JOY THAT KILLS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas. Based on a short story by Kate Chopin set in 19th-century New Orleans, this tale is a portrait of a frail young woman whose spirit is repressed by her domineering husband. Afflicted by a weak heart since childhood, Louise Mallard is confined to her home first by her father, and later by her husband, Brently Mallard. Sheltered from life and experience, her sole pleasure is derived from looking at photographs of foreign lands. Despite an encouraging report from Louise's doctor, Brently refuses to let her venture out of doors. Louise is liberated from her repressive existence when her husband is believed to have been killed, and she experiences the sweet joy of freedom for the first time. But through an ironic twist of fate, her happiness is short-lived. Includes a promo for the following week's production, "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank."
