SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR, THE {ROBERT MORSE, NANETTE FABRAY, PAT PAULSEN, PAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS, MARK LINDSAY} (TV)

Summary

One in this weekly series of comedy/variety shows, hosted by comedy-singing duo Tom and Dick Smothers, which features political satire, irreverent parodies of topical social issues, and musical performances. On this program, the Smothers Brothers are joined by Robert Morse, Nanette Fabray, Pat Paulsen, and Paul Revere and the Raiders featuring Mark Lindsay. The brothers' opening remarks refer to four U.S. hydrogen bombs that were lost in Greenland during the past week. The duo then sings a song about Tom Smothers falling into a vat of chocolate. Other highlights include: Paul Revere and the Raiders perform "I Don't Want Nobody" and "Too Much Talk," a song which decries the paucity of action directed at improving the world; Tom plays Romeo and Nanette Fabray plays his mother in a sketch parody of "Romeo and Juliet" in which parental interference comically dooms the young lovers; Robert Morse sings "Wouldn't It Be Loverly"; Morse and the Smothers Brothers sing "Peace Song" which represents the dove and hawk attitudes towards war and peace and lampoons Robert Kennedy's confused stance on the subject; the Jimmy Joyce Singers sing "Hey Mr. Sunshine"; Pat Paulsen offers an editorial on congressional ethics and denies he is a candidate for the U.S. presidency, although his actions belie his denial; the Smothers Brothers, Morse, Fabray, and Mark Lindsay perform a song-and-dance tribute to various styles of shoes; Tom performs a song entitled "I Should've Been a Nun"; and the Smothers Brothers conclude the show by encouraging viewers to improve the world by volunteering for VISTA domestic peace corps. Includes commercials.
