I LOVE LUCY: THE DIET {FLASHBACK VERSION OF 1951/10/29 EPISODE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about the escapades of Lucy Ricardo, a zany redheaded housewife with show business aspirations, her Cuban-born bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo, and their best friends and neighbors Fred and Ethel Mertz. This is one of several "flashback" episodes that were aired during the time just before and after Lucille Ball gave birth to her son. This flashback of an earlier episode, "The Diet" (originally aired on October 29, 1951), begins with Ricky and the Mertzes discussing Ricky and Lucy's new baby. Ricky explains that all is well with Lucy at the hospital, except that she is vowing to go on a diet, which leads the three friends to recall Lucy's first diet attempt. After insisting that she does not need to diet because her weight is the same as it was when she married Ricky, Lucy is dismayed to discover that she is indeed twenty-two pounds heavier. When Lucy hears that Ricky's dance partner is leaving the show, she convinces Ricky to let her audition for the spot, but finds that the costume doesn't fit her. Ricky promises her that if she loses weight in time for the show at the end of the week, she can have the part. With Ethel's help, Lucy takes extreme measures to lose weight. Included is a re-creation of Lucy and Desi's "Cuban Pete/Sally Sweet" vaudeville number from their 1950 tour. Includes a commercial for Philip Morris with Lucy and Desi, and an audio promotion for "My Little Margie," sponsored by Philip Morris.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by John F. McGillicuddy.
