INGMAR BERGMAN'S SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE {THIRD SCENE: PAULA} {DUBBED IN ENGLISH} / THE WORLD OF INGMAR BERGMAN {FARO} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:18413. Part three in the first American broadcast of this original six-part dramatic miniseries, written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, which was originally broadcast in Sweden in 1973. This program surveys the emotional devastation of Marianne and Johan, whose ostensibly perfect marriage deteriorates into bitterness and divorce. This version was dubbed into English by the two stars. Each of the six parts features an introduction by actress Liv Ullmann, and concludes with a segment of an interview with Bergman (extracted from Jorn Donner's documentary film, "Three Scenes with Ingmar Bergman," and retitled "The World of Ingmar Bergman" for U.S. television broadcast), subtitled in English. In part three, Marianne is spending the summer at their country house when Johan arrives unexpectedly and announces that he has fallen in love with another woman. He brusquely tells her he has taken a leave from the university and will be departing the next day for Paris with his lover Paula, and will be gone for at least eight months. He explains that he wants a clean break in their relationship and reveals his growing bitterness, his feelings of guilt, and his dissatisfaction with their life together. Marianne implores him to stay so that they can try to fix the problems in their marriage, but he declines. Still in shock, Marianne asks to see a photo of Paula. Johan shows her a snapshot and tells her about his obsession with the twenty-three-year-old woman and about their lovemaking. Marianne and Johan embrace, cry, and sleep holding hands. The next morning, Marianne helps Johan pack, and when he starts to leave, she breaks down and desperately begs him to stay. After he's gone, she calls a close friend for support and learns to her horror that many of their friends knew about Paula. This portion of "The World of Ingmar Bergman" deals with Bergman's affinity for the island of Faro, where he worked and lived at the time the film was made. Continues with T:18415.

[PBS ran two versions of this miniseries concurrently in March and April of 1977. This dubbed version debuted on Wednesday, March 9, 1977, and ran for the next five consecutive Wednesdays. "The World of Ingmar Bergman" segments, however, are subtitled in both versions.]
