One in this series of nightly news analysis programs. This program is anchored by Jim Lehrer and Judy Woodruff. First, the two anchors summarize recent news events covering the following topics, among others: President Ronald Reagan's upcoming pre-summit meeting in New York City; the nuclear arms talks in Geneva; a meeting between President Reagan and King Hussein; the Islamic Jihad group of Lebanon; the violent activity of pro-Syrian forces in Lebanon; the Federal Index; the Delta plane crash in Dallas; and Prime Minister Botha's proposal to the blacks of South Africa. In the next segment of this program Charlayne Hunter-Gault reports on the situation in South Africa as part of her series on apartheid and visits Kwa Thema, a black township in South Africa. Highlights of this piece include: a conversation with a nun, Sister Agatha, about the horrifying condition of the town and of the people's spirits there; Father Peter Hortop, a white priest in Kwa Thema, discusses skin color and violence by the army and the police; Sister Agatha explains how the young people are being pushed into violence to vent their rage; in an interview, a black police officer, Constable Michael Modisa, expresses his belief in the government; children explain why they are boycotting school; the violent acts of the army and police against children are examined; and political statements are made at funerals in Kwa Thema. Included in this segment is footage of the church in Kwa Thema, the living quarters of black officers, army and police officers on patrol, bruised children who were attacked by the police, and a funeral in Kwa Thema. The final segment of this program deals with the economy. Top economists and financiers discuss the possibility of a recession, whether or not the United States should intervene with the International Money Market, the trade deficit, the budget deficit, government spending, the need for freer trade, the possible results of a tax increase, the threat of inflation, and tax reform.
