MUSEUM OF BROADCASTING'S 5TH ANNUAL TELEVISION FESTIVAL IN LOS ANGELES, THE: SALUTE TO JIM HENSON {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's 5th Annual Television Festival in Los Angeles. (The Museum was known at that time as The Museum of Broadcasting.) Presented with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television, and is dedicated to television's creative community. Ronald Haver of LACMA's film department introduces Robert M. Batscha, president of The Museum of Broadcasting, who in turn introduces Muppets creator Jim Henson. Henson reviews his career; shows clips from his television and film work; describes the creation of the Muppets and other creatures that he and his staff have designed through the years; and pulls out Kermit the Frog to introduce him to the audience. During a question-and-answer session with the audience, Henson discusses his start in television; his initial interest in working with puppets; the early days of his Washington, D.C., program "Sam and Friends"; the techniques used to operate the Muppets and his other creations; his working relationship with Frank Oz; the creation and development of the television series "Sesame Street," "The Muppet Show," and "Fraggle Rock," as well as the animated series "Jim Henson's Muppet Babies" and his new NBC series "The Storyteller"; and his film work, including the Muppet movies and his "creature" films, "Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth." (Audience members' questions and comments are inaudible.)
