WOMEN OF BREWSTER PLACE, THE {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

A two-part made-for-television movie based on the novel by Gloria Naylor in which seven strong-willed women living in a rundown housing project called Brewster Place find strength through their friendship over many decades. Part one begins with the arrival of Mattie Michaels as the newest tenant. Looking around her new home, she reflects back on her days growing up on a farm in Tennessee with her parents. One encounter with an amorous neighbor leads to Mattie getting pregnant. After her father beats her up, Mattie moves in with childhood friend Etta Mae. After having a baby boy, Basil, Mattie looks for a place for the two of them to stay. She finds a haven with elderly Miss Eva, who's raising her young granddaughter, Ciel. As the years pass, Mattie finds work as a beautician, meanwhile coming to see Eva as a mother figure. When Eva dies suddenly, Ciel is sent to live with her parents. Mattie buys Eva's house and is truly happy for the first time in her life. However, Basil gets in trouble with the law, leading to a tragedy which brings Mattie to Brewster Place. As Mattie gets to know her new neighbors, two friends from the past -- the gold-digging Etta Mae and the now-grown Ciel -- come back into her life and also settle down in Brewster Place.

Ciel's husband has returned to Brewster Place, while friction has developed between the elderly Miss Sophie and Cora Lee, who's desperately trying to manage her six children as a single mother. Finally, Kiswana agrees to let her boyfriend Abshu move in with her as she attempts to start a tenants' association. Concludes with a preview of Part Two. This program is closed-captioned. Includes commercials.
