ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT: 1989 SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE COVERAGE {INTERRUPTS 1989 WORLD SERIES} (TV)

Summary

This "ABC News Special Report" interrupts ABC Sports coverage of the third game of the 1989 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. While reviewing the first two games won by the Athletics, sports commentator Tim McCarver's broadcast is interrupted during the earthquake. From Washington, D.C., Ted Koppel announces that an earthquake has struck the San Francisco Bay Area, and pieces together information about the quake from incoming reports from San Francisco stations KGO-TV and KABC-TV. Among those interviewed at Candlestick Park, the site of the World Series, are Francis T. Vincent, Jr., commissioner of baseball, and Commander Isiah Nelson of the San Francisco Police Department. From New York, Peter Jennings interviews Ken Kashiwahara of the ABC News bureau in San Francisco, who describes building codes and earthquake procedures.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, 1997.
