FRAMES OF REFERENCE: DANCING ON THE EDGE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of arts programs. This program
features the work of dancer and choreographer Trisha
Brown. As the program begins, Brown speaks with
dancers at Bennington College about the method she uses
to create dance pieces, and explains the key to creating
the piece, "Opal Loop." Brown explains that she allowed
her body to react as it naturally would after making
each initial move, thus creating a natural, flowing
piece. Then, as three of her dancers simultaneously
demonstrate sequences they created, Brown reads out
the instructions she gave them. In this way, Brown
demonstrates how each creative individual had different
results, even though they were given the same sets of
guidelines and rules. The next segment includes three
video art pieces featuring the work of Trisha Brown.
The first piece, "Opal Loop/802," uses the sound of wind
to accompany the flowing movements of dancers,
performed by each dancer individually and together as a
group. During this piece, quick edits are used to flash
back and forth between individual and group
performances. The second piece, "Water Motor for Dancer
and Camera," features Trisha Brown dancing in slow
motion during the first half of the piece to simulate
the feeling of moving through water. The third piece,
"Locus/Altered," features synchronized movement as
dancers perform in their own spaces. Brown comments
on her image of various cubic forms within a cube. As
she speaks, the images of the dancers are split up among
the screen in four sections, thus illustrating the
concept that Brown describes.
Cataloging of this program was made possible by Blake
Byrne.
