GREAT PERFORMANCES: LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: JUILLIARD AT 80 (TV)

Summary

One in this series on the performing arts. This special program celebrates the 80th anniversary of the founding of The Juilliard School in New York City. Patrick Watson and Juilliard alumni Kelly McGillis and John Rubinstein host a tour of the various activities in the school's music, dance, and drama departments. The program begins with Jorge Mester conducting the Juilliard Orchestra in a performance of the overture to Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmila," followed by the Variation movement from Johannes Brahms's String Sextet No. 1 in B-flat, op. 18, performed by the Juilliard String Quartet with student assisting artists. After a behind-the-scenes look at the audition process for the Juilliard dance division, the Juilliard Dance Ensemble performs choreographer Paul Taylor's "Cloven Kingdom" set to a collage of music by Arcangelo Corelli, Henry Cowell, and John Herbert McDowell. In a segment that looks at the training that actors receive in Juilliard's drama division, the Juilliard Theater Center performs various selections from the classical and modern dramatic repertoire. Toward the program's conclusion, the Juilliard Orchestra is joined by famed soprano Leontyne Price to perform "Death of Cleopatra" from Samuel Barber's opera "Anthony and Cleopatra," followed by Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra."
