THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN: THE MAYFLOWER VOYAGERS (TV)
Summary
One in this eight-part miniseries which stars the "Peanuts" characters as they are transported into the past and future to participate in various events in American history. In this episode, part one of eight, the "Peanuts" gang travels on the Mayflower to explain the story behind the fateful voyage and settlement of the Pilgrims. Linus narrates the events aboard ship and at the settlement. Seventy adults and thirty children, including Pilgrims, strangers seeking wealth, and indentured servants take the dangerous journey across the North Atlantic Ocean. The ship's conditions go from bad to worse when dangerous storms and cross winds damage the ship. Inside, the passengers are seasick, crowded, and restless. After fixing a crack in one of the Mayflower's main beams, the passengers, who have wrestled with the idea of turning back, decide to push on. After two and a half months on board, they sight land and finally arrive at Provincetown Harbor a few days later. As a scouting party looks for a suitable place for a settlement, the crew finds provisions on shore. In the four weeks in Provincetown, however, sickness develops on board and the Mayflower decides to find another harbor. At Plymouth, the immigrants find a settlement site, but half of the adults lie sick or dying. After a harsh winter, only twenty adults survive. All of the thirty children remain. With Captain Myles Standish in charge, they begin to build shelters. Finally, the settlers make contact with Indians -- Samoset, Squanto, and Chief Massaquoit. Squanto, whose tribe lived on the settlers' site before its members were wiped out by plague, tells the settlers his unique story of capture by white men and his travels to Europe. Squanto teaches the settlers how to live off the land, and they sign a peace agreement with Chief Massaquoit. When the harvest arrives, the Pilgrims and the Indians share a feast of Thanksgiving.
