NET PLAYHOUSE: JULIUS MONK'S PLAZA 9 {PLAZA NINE} (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic showcase series. This program presents one of the famed cabaret revues created and conceived by satirist Julius Monk. Five cast members perform fast-paced comic songs and quick sketches that spoof contemporary politics and culture in front of a live audience at the Plaza 9 theatre in the Plaza Hotel in New York. In this program, Terry O'Mara and Alex Wipf perform a song about presidential candidate Richard M. Nixon; Mary Louise Wilson and Rex Robbins portray a couple who comment on topical issues as they peddle through Central Park; the company sings "Take a Trip with a Hippie"; in "The Ploy's the Thing," Liz Sheridan and Alex Wipf portray two singles who meet at Malcolm's Prune, an Upper East Side singles bar; Sheridan sings "Write a Book About the Kennedys"; O'Mara, Liz Sheridan, and Mary Louise Wilson perform a rock 'n' roll song, dedicated to ex-movie star and California governor Ronald Reagan, that posits that "What the Country Needs Is Another Movie Star"; Wilson performs a folk song that spoofs the New York City newspapers and the subway system; the company sings a topical ditty about Charles de Gaulle; and Wipf sings about the way violence has been used in the interests of peace throughout history. The performers satirize such fads as the bicycling craze, hippies, the singles scene, pins and catchy slogans, social drinking, and books about any of the Kennedy family members. Political figures mentioned include Robert F. Kennedy, William F. Buckley, Jr., and Charles de Gaulle. Also featured is a sketch about a modernized New York version of the tale of the princess who falls in love with a frog. As the program concludes, the entire cast performs a tongue-in-cheek choral number about the attempt to create the perfect American society.
