DONAHUE IN RUSSIA {SOVIET JEWS/CHERNOBYL} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of talk/interview programs hosted by Phil Donahue. Recorded in the Soviet Union, this program is one in a week-long series of "Donahue" shows that examines a variety of issues related to the life of the Soviet people. Donahue and his crew visit a variety of locations and conduct a series of discussions and interviews. The program features interviews with a cross-section of Jews who convey their views about life in the Soviet Union; one group of people who are among the Jews attempting to leave the Soviet Union, known as the Refusniks, poignantly express their fear and distrust by declining to speak with Donahue. The program includes a trip to a military base, where young Soviet soldiers answer questions and state their views about their country, the army, and their impressions of the United States. In a dramatic segment, Donahue takes the first Western television trip to Chernobyl, the scene of the worst nuclear accident to date. Accompanied by U.S. physician and radiation specialist Dr. Robert Gale, Donahue discusses the clean-up operations and some of the long-term effects of the accident; the history of the design of the Chernobyl reactor; and the worldwide implications of this accident for the future of nuclear power. Includes film footage of the Chernobyl power plant, and the stark villages that were abandoned after the disaster. (In New York, this syndicated program aired on WNBC.) Includes commercials.

(This series was telecast locally in Dayton, Ohio, from 1967 to 1970, and was nationally syndicated thereafter until 1996; from 1967 to 1977, the series was telecast under the title "The Phil Donahue Show.")

Cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Times Mirror Foundation.
