WORLD SERIES, 1975: GAME 6 (CINCINNATI REDS VS. BOSTON RED SOX) (TV)
Summary
This sports program is a live telecast from Fenway Park of Game Six of the 1975 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox. The game has had many delays because of heavy rains in Boston. Dick Stockton, Tony Kubek, and Joe Garagiola are the announcers. The starting pitchers for the Red Sox and the Reds are Luis Tiant and Gary Nolan, respectively. Pete Rose hits a hard line drive to left field in the top of the first inning but Carl "Yaz" Yastrzemski makes a diving catch to save a base hit; in between innings, Stockton mentions that the family of one of the umpires has received death threats from fans because of a controversial call in an earlier game; in the bottom of the first inning, Yaz and catcher Carlton Fisk get singles off Nolan; the next batter, Fred Lynn hits a three-run home run to give the Red Sox the lead 3-0; in the bottom of the third inning, Fred Norman becomes the new pitcher for the Reds; he gives up a double to Denny Doyle and then gets into a jam when he walks Lynn to load the bases; Reds' manager, Sparky Anderson, pulls Norman out of the game and brings in Jack Billingham, who strikes out Rico Petrocelli to end the inning; in the top of the fourth inning, Tony Perez hits a single off Tiant; the next batter, George Foster, checks his swing, and the ball goes to the shortstop for what should be a routine double play, but a throwing error has both Foster and Perez safely on base; Dwight Evans hits a ground rule double to start the bottom of the fourth inning; Billingham pitches himself out of a jam once more, but the score is still 3-0 in favor of the Red Sox; with a man on first, Rose hits a single which advances the runner to third in the top of the fifth inning; Foster then hits a deep shot to center which Lynn can't catch up to, but makes a tremendous effort for the ball as he crashes hard into the cement wall; the hit by Foster allows two runs to score for the Reds; Fenway Park becomes silent as Lynn is very slow to get up after the collision; in the same inning, Johnny Bench hits one off the Green Monster in left field which scores Ken Griffey to tie the game up; Clay Carroll comes in to pitch for the Reds in the bottom of the fifth; and in the very next inning, Anderson goes to his bullpen once again and brings in Pedro Borbone.
In the top of the seventh inning, with Ken Griffey on first, Joe Morgan rips a single; in the same inning, Morgan runs with a pitch to George Foster, who doubles off-the-wall in center to score two runs and make it a 5-3 advantage for the Reds; the first pitch of the eighth inning finds Cesar Geronimo launching the ball over the right field fence which builds the lead for the Reds 6-3; Red Sox starting pitcher Luis Tiant gets pulled after that home run and receives a standing ovation from the home crowd; in the bottom of the eighth, Fred Lynn leads off with a single off of Reds pitcher Pedro Borbon's leg; Reds manager Sparky Anderson changes pitchers, bringing in Rawly Eastwick; with two men on base, still in the bottom of the eighth, pinch-hitter Bernie Carbo crushes a three-run homer which ties the score at 6-6; in the bottom half of the ninth inning, Anderson makes his fifth pitching change of the game when he brings in Will McEnaney; the Reds intentionally walk Carlton Fisk, which loads the bases; the next batter, Lynn, hits a high fly ball which drifts towards foul territory but is playable; Foster catches it and makes a perfect throw to Johnny Bench, who tags out Denny Doyle as he tries to tag-up from third with the game-winning run; the game goes into extra-innings, and Dave Concepcion leads off the tenth inning with a single and then steals second; in the bottom of the tenth, Anderson brings in Pat Darcy, the eighth pitcher of the game for the Reds; in the eleventh inning, Morgan hits a deep fly ball towards right field and Dwight Evans gets a late jump on it, but makes a spectacular game-saving catch; in the bottom of the twelfth inning, the first batter is Fisk, who crushes the ball into left field and hits the foul pole for the game-winning home run; this subsequently pushes the series to a seventh and deciding game; the replay of the home run shows Fisk watching the ball and putting plenty of "body english" into it until he sees it is a home run; and Kubek interviews Fisk on the field about the home run and the excitement of going to a game seven at Fenway Park.
