GOOD MORNING, MR. ORWELL (TV)

Summary

This special program features avant-garde artist Nam June Paik's vision of the video-saturated world of 1984. The program features an eclectic array of artists performing live and in taped segments from around the world. George Plimpton hosts the New York segments of the program, and Jacques Villers hosts the segments from Paris via satellite. Interspersed throughout the program are references to George Orwell, who Plimpton refers to as "the first video prophet." The New York segments include a performance by Laurie Anderson and Peter Gabriel, entitled "This is the Picture"; a performance by John Cage; songs by poets Peter Orlovsky and Allen Ginsberg; a dance performance by Merce Cunningham; comedy sketches by Leslie Fuller and Mitchell Kriegman; and Charlotte Moorman's performance with an experimental instrument, the TV cello. Among the artists featured on satellite from Paris are pianist and artist Joseph Beuys; pop singer Sapho; and Urban Sax, a music group consisting of eighty musicians. Additionally, rock group Oingo Boingo, featuring Danny Elfman, performs in San Francisco, and the music of Philip Glass accompanies a video presentation created by Dean Winkler and John Sanborn. The program also includes a video clip from the surrealist artist Salvador Dali, and music by composers Mauricio Kagel and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Acquisition and cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
