Highlights of this program, and the winners, include: Funniest Female in a Motion Picture, Bette Midler ("Ruthless People"); Ed Begley, Jr., takes a walk down the memory lane of the 1970s; Funniest Female in a Television Series, Betty White ("The Golden Girls"); Funniest Male in a Television Series, Johnny Carson ("The Tonight Show"), with Red Buttons accepting the award for Carson; Whoopi Goldberg does a tribute to the television sitcom "I Remember Mama"; Funniest Female Stand-Up Comic, Lily Tomlin; the Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to Norman Lear and clips of his shows such as "All in the Family," "Good Times," "Maude," "The Jeffersons," and "One" are shown; Funniest Male Stand-Up Comic, Robin Williams; Funniest Record/Video for a Male or Female, Bette Midler ("Mud Will Be Flung"); Funniest Newcomer Male or Female, Woody Harrelson ("Cheers"); Ed McMahon receives an award for Favorite Second Banana and the trophy is played by Tim Conway; Steven Wright does a stand-up routine; the Lifetime Achievement Award for Females is presented to Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, Bette Midler, and Lily Tomlin; Female Performer of the Year, Bette Midler; Mark Russell performs a politically-based routine; Funniest Television Star in a Special - Male or Female, Robin Williams ("An Evening at the Met"); the Lifetime Achievement Award for Males is presented to Steve Allen, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Sid Caesar, and Jonathan Winters; Male Performer of the Year, Robin WIlliams; and Male Performance in a Motion Picture, Woody Allen ("Hannah and Her Sisters").
