CHICO AND THE MAN: CHICO'S COUSIN PEPE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a cantankerous garage owner and his wisecracking Chicano assistant. In this episode, Chico's girlfriend Liz graduates from nursing school and is thrilled to learn that Chico's cousin Pepe, the rich and famous blind musician, is coming to visit. Pepe arrives and meets Ed and takes a tour of the garage, then explaining that his chauffeur recently had to quit. He offers the job to Chico, detailing the many perks of celebrity life, and Chico happily agrees. Ed is stung at Chico's decision to leave, but Chico promises to train a replacement. Liz arrives and Pepe is immediately charmed by his "foxy" number-one fan, and he sings "Light My Fire" for her. Chico goes out on a job and Liz and Pepe continue chatting, leading Ed to suggest that she could be his new chauffeur-slash-companion instead. Despite her newly-won nursing degree, Liz is won over by the impressive salary and takes the job.
When Chico returns, he is highly indignant about being replaced, pointing out that Liz knows nothing about cars. He is even more affronted to learn that it was Ed who suggested the plan, but Liz is then insulted at Pepe's aggressive flirting and storms off. Pepe is surprised and gratified that she refused to accept his "jive," being used to awkward special treatment because of his celebrity and his disability, and Chico agrees to take the chauffeur job after all. This leads to another argument with Ed, however, but Pepe manages to smooth things over between "Chico and the Man" with a song. Later, Pepe returns to say goodbye, accompanied by his new male chauffeur and explaining that he is abandoning the "playboy life," but Chico and Ed are doubtful of this when they meet his comely new female butler.
