MAVERICK: PAPPY {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of offbeat western dramas about the Mavericks, unlikely heroes who prefer gambling to gunplay. In this episode, Bret and Bart receive a visit from Dan Jamison, the son of their father's longtime ladyfriend Gida. It seems their elderly "Pappy" gave Gida the slip and is now engaged to the beautiful 18-year-old Josephine, daughter of the prominent and haughty RenŽ St. Cloud of Louisiana. The Maverick brothers travel south with Dan to visit Gida and learn more about Pappy's plans. On their way, they meet up with Josephine's older brothers. The Mavericks don't let on who they are, as Bart stays on drinking with the St. Clouds while Bret and Dan go on to Gida's. A jealous Gida informs them that she fears for Pappy's life, adding that its strange for a family of the St. Clouds' wealth and status to welcome a penniless old gambler into their family. Meanwhile, Bart hits it off with the brothers St. Cloud, notices that one of them is secretly carrying a pouch of gold nuggets, and gets invited to the family estate for the engagement celebration. During the party, RenŽ St. Cloud approaches Bart and hires him to kill Pappy in the guise of a fair fight after the engagement announcement. Bart accepts, while Bret joins the party and secretly introduces himself to Jospehine as Pappy's son. Josephine warns him that Pappy is in danger and should get out of town right away. Later, the Maverick brothers come up with a plan to find out what the St. Clouds are up to by making it look like Bart has killed Pappy in a gun duel, using Bret -- with the help of some theatrical makeup -- as a stand-in for the Maverick patriarch. Includes commercials, promos, and a public service announcement.
