60 MINUTES {LENELL GETER'S IN JAIL; HELEN HAYES; ANDY ROONEY ON FARM SUBSIDIES} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. This installment presents reports on the conviction of Lenell Geter and the life of Helen Hayes. First, in "Lenell Geter's in Jail," Morley Safer heads an investigation into the controversial imprisonment of Lenell Geter, a young African-American engineer who was convicted of the armed robbery of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in a Dallas suburb. Safer interviews Geter, who asserts his innocence and proposes jealousy as a possible motive for his conviction. The reporter also speaks to Dallas County prosecutors who call Geter a "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," who "robs for fun." Safer then gives a history of the case and interviews one of the witnesses for the prosecution about her identification of Geter as the culprit based on a possibly biased line-up/mug-shot procedure. Safer explains that Geter's court-appointed attorney was given only one day to prepare Geter's defense, and that all of his requests for a trial postponement were denied. Safer then produces witnesses who can verify that Geter was at work at the time of the robbery -- people with whom the prosecutors never spoke -- but, despite Safer's findings, Dallas County prosecutors remain adamant in their assertion of Geter's guilt. Next, in "Helen Hayes," Mike Wallace conducts an interview with actress Helen Hayes about her life in the theatre. Hayes begins by talking about her reputation as a "plain Jane" and a "grey lady," and then Wallace gives a brief summary of the actress's early career in the theatre. Next, Wallace speaks with actress Ruth Gordon about her friendship with Hayes, and he shows home movies of Hayes at her home in Nyack, New York, in the 1930s -- including footage of the actress with Gordon, Lillian Gish, Agnes Moorehead, Joan Crawford, Vivian Leigh, and Laurence Olivier. Hayes talks about her title, "The First Lady of the American Stage," her history as an active Republican, the death of her daughter Mary MacArthur, her marriage to playwright Charles MacArthur, her unwavering fidelity to MacArthur despite advances from Clark Gable and her "crush" on Gary Cooper, and the opening of the new Helen Hayes Theatre in New York. As the program concludes, Andy Rooney comments on the federal government's practice of giving subsidies to farmers for not growing crops. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include Kevin Costner for Apple computers.
