RICH MAN, POOR MAN {CHAPTER 9 OF 9} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:05956. Chapter nine and the conclusion of this nine-part mini-series based on Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel that follows the divergent paths of the two Jordache brothers -- Rudy, the educated and ambitious one, who triumphs over his impoverished background, and Tom, the unruly rebel--from 1945 to the 1960s. As this chapter opens, Julie is relying more on alcohol under the growing pressures and loneliness of being a politician's wife. Marsh Goodwin, Rudy's campaign manager, and his wife charter Tom's yacht for a cruise in the Mediterranean and help him expand the business by sending him a number of referrals. Back in New York, Rudy discovers that Teresa has divorced Tom on the grounds of desertion, has become a prostitute with an arrest record, and has sent Wesley to a military school. Her criminal record allows Tom to gain custody of his son, and learning that he is no longer wanted by the mob, he returns to the U.S. to pick up Wesley and bring him back to France with him. Tom soon falls in love with Kate, the cook on his yacht, and they decide to marry. Meanwhile, Rudy's political career and Julie's drinking lead to troubles in their marriage. When incriminating photos of Julie are printed by the local college newspaper, Rudy goes berserk, ransacks their offices, and badly hurts one of the staff, causing irreparable damage to his political career. While in France for Tom and Kate's wedding, Julie gets into difficulties with Tom's old enemy, Falconetti, and rescuing her, Tom barely manages to keep from killing him. The program ends as Falconetti exacts his final revenge. Commercials deleted.
