RICH MAN, POOR MAN {CHAPTER 8 OF 9} (TV)

Summary

Chapter eight of this nine-part mini-series based on Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel that follows the divergent paths of the two Jordache brothers -- Rudy, the educated and ambitious one, who triumphs over his impoverished background, and Tom, the unruly rebel -- from 1945 to the 1960s. This chapter opens with Tom's shipboard nemesis, Falconetti, taunting Tom and his friend Roy. After Falconetti commits the ultimate act of aggression against Roy, Tom retaliates by beating him to a pulp, causing Roy and himself to be ordered off the ship in New York. Rudy, recently married to Julie, seeks Tom out in order to tell him that their mother is close to death. They both go to see her at the hospital where she dies in Tom's arms soon after making a touching confession. At her funeral, an encounter with Teddy Boylan brings up painful and embarrassing memories for Julie, and Tom reassures her that he will never tell Rudy of her relationship with Boylan. As the two brothers bring each other up to date, it is clear that the mob is still after Tom, and that Rudy has entered politics and is running for the New York State Senate. Rudy also tells Tom that he invested the three thousand dollars Tom gave him to pay off an old debt, and that he has made Tom quite a sum of money. Tom decides to use the windfall to fulfill a dream he and Roy have long had of buying a yacht and chartering cruises for the wealthy. Leaving for Europe to start his new venture, Tom reconciles with Rudy and asks him to try and find his son. After a difficult campaign during which Julie relies heavily on alcohol, Rudy wins the race for State Senate. Commercials deleted. Continues with T:05960.
