RICH MAN, POOR MAN {CHAPTER 2 OF 9} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:05990. Chapter two of this nine-part mini-series based on Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel that follows the divergent paths of the two Jordache brothers -- Rudy, the educated and ambitious one, who triumphs over his impoverished background, and Tom, the unruly rebel -- from 1945 to the 1960s. As this chapter opens, Tom has been banished to live with his uncle Harold and his family in California. There he has a deep romantic affair with Clothilde, their Irish maid. Once Harold discovers the affair, he puts an end to it by threatening to deport her. Distraught over losing Clothilde, Tom gets drunk and goes home with Teresa, a local girl. Meanwhile, Rudy goes to college and gets a job in Duncan Calderwood's department store. While skiing with his roommate, Brad, Rudy meets Calderwood's daughter, Virginia, who develops a crush on him. He and Brad want to open a small ski lodge to earn some money, and Rudy's parents agree to loan them funds to get started as an investment in the plan. While in New York City to secure supplies for the lodge, Rudy goes to see Julie in her first Broadway play, but is crushed when he sees her greet her lover, former air force Captain Willie Abbott. Teresa's father charges Tom with statutory rape, and Mr. Jordache is forced to pay him off with the money he had planned on using to set Rudy up in business, but not until telling him that he never wants to see Tom again. Tom is kicked out of his uncle's house and after making up with Teresa, the two of them leave town. Mary Jordache berates her husband for wasting their money that way, and as a result, he rows himself out to sea during a storm. Commercials deleted. Continues with T:05948.
