DICK CAVETT SHOW, THE {CAROL BURNETT, CARROLL O'CONNOR, BURT REYNOLDS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs, hosted by Dick Cavett, featuring interviews with newsmakers and people in the political and cultural forefront. In this special edition from Hollywood, guests include Carol Burnett, Carroll O'Connor, and Burt Reynolds. Cavett begins the show with a monologue about the difference between California and New York, where the show is usually taped. Cavett's first guest, O'Connor, touches on such topics as: O'Connor's "All in the Family" character Archie Bunker being known as a "lovable bigot"; what racial epithet Archie would throw at Cavett, "a five-foot, six-and-a-half-inch WASP"; whether "All in the Family" exploits racism; racism and bigotry in modern society; the troubles that series creator Norman Lear had with getting "All in the Family" on the air; O'Connor's college education; the episode of "All in the Family" about impotence; how great success in the entertainment industry can lead to pressure; the satire of "All in the Family"; and the grind of creating a new episode each week.
Cavett's second guest, Burnett, touches on such topics as: exposing Cavett's middle name; her thoughts on Reynolds; problems with dry mouth and California's drinking water; euphemisms for diarrhea; her new book which features letters and poetry sent to her by children; her special with Julie Andrews and their "weird chemistry"; how she discovered the talents of Harvey Korman; how she "lets her hair down"; how fans treat television stars as opposed to movie stars; and her disappointment at never having met Cary Grant.
Cavett next interviews his third guest, Reynolds, who touches on such topics as: whether he is aware that Burnett has a "thing" for him; the two people he would take to a deserted island; how he's changed over the years; his bad knee; what celebrities it's hard to imagine using the restroom; whether he's afraid of getting typecast due to his image; working on the comedy film "Fuzz" with Yul Brynner and Raquel Welch; his "heavy picture," "Deliverance," and the sodomy depicted in it; and the "interesting" behavior of "Deliverance" novelist James Dickey on set. Includes commercials. Cavett also does in-studio commercials for Alpo dog food, which goes spectacularly wrong, and Stratolounger chairs.
(Cavett hosted several talk shows under the title "The Dick Cavett Show," which aired on ABC from 1969 to 1972, on PBS from 1977 to 1982, on the USA network from 1985 to 1986, and on CNBC from 1989 to 1995. During 1973 to 1975, the show aired irregularly as part of "ABC's Wide World of Entertainment." Other versions of "The Dick Cavett Show" include a variety series on CBS in 1975 and a talk show on ABC in 1986.)
