GREAT PERFORMANCES: DANCE IN AMERICA: DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM (TV)
Summary
One in this dance series presented under the umbrella of "Great Performances." This program profiles the Dance Theatre of Harlem. It features commentary from people involved in the company, accompanied by footage of rehearsals and performances. The company's founder, Arthur Mitchell, explains his reasons for starting the Dance Theatre. "Forces of Rhythm" is performed, followed by another piece. A dance student gives a glowing description of Mitchell and his work as a teacher. A piece called "Bugako" is performed, followed by "The Beloved." Female dancers explain the consequences of being a black dancer interested in ballet, and they share their experiences. Another dance piece is performed, followed by a statement from a male dancer about his start in dancing. Two more performances are featured, the last one titled "Dougla," a word that describes a blend of Hindu and African styles.
