Summary
One in this long-running western drama series about widower Ben Cartwright, his sons, and their adventures on their ranch in Nevada's Ponderosa. In this episode, Candy, the Cartwright's ranch hand, discovers that the down-and-out Army veterans who are squatting on the Ponderosa are led by his former sergeant, Mike Russell. Ben is touched by the plight of the disenfranchised men and the Cartwrights offer them food and shelter, unaware that Russell and his friends are developing a nefarious plan to rob the Carson City Mint. With the help of explosives, a cannon, and a munition expert named Jeb, Russell anticipates a successful heist. But when Candy discovers that bomb detonators are missing from the ranch, he grows suspicious of the group and confronts his old friend. Russell reveals his plan for the break, explaining his intention to hold the gold as ransom until Congress grants them the government pension that is rightfully theirs. Kidnapping Candy so he can help to execute the crime, Russell gains access to the mint, but a violent conflict between him and a disgruntled Jeb causes the scheme to begin unraveling. Commercials deleted.
