TWILIGHT ZONE, THE: THE THIRTY-FATHOM GRAVE (TV)
Summary
One in this science fiction/fantasy anthology series hosted by Rod Serling. In this episode, the crew of a naval destroyer is perplexed by a mysterious clanging sound that seems to emanate from a sunken submarine thirty fathoms below. One man, Chief Bell, is particularly disturbed by the ghostly hammering. The ship's captain, concerned that the noise is a survivor's cry for help, sends a diver to investigate the partially buried and brutally routed submarine. Chief Bell's discomfort turns to paranoid hysteria as the vessel is revealed to be a U.S. submarine, sunk by the Japanese twenty years earlier in the course of World War II. Bell begins to see visions of dead sailors beckoning to him. The captain sends the diver back down to the submarine to attempt further communication. The diver finds a rusty, twenty-year-old set of dog tags in the wreckage; they belong to Chief Bell. Bell confronts his surprising history with the submarine, and tragedy ensues. Later investigation of the submarine provides conflicting explanations for the eerie clanging; one prosaic, one macabre. Commercials deleted.
