HOTPOINT HOLIDAY HOUR: THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER
(RADIO)
Summary
This Christmas special features the play, "The Man Who Came to Dinner," originally written for the stage by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. Jack Benny plays Sheridan Whiteside, a distinguished author and radio personality with an interest in mass murderers. Whiteside is a cantankerous old man who is used to being pampered; while touring the United States, he injures himself at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Stanley. Consequently, Whiteside takes over their house as his own personal command center, invites his friends from prison to their home, and, at the same time, files a lawsuit against the Stanleys for $150,000. Whiteside becomes entangled in unforeseen problems, including the resignation of his secretary (Dorothy McGuire), who plans to marry a local reporter (Gregory Peck); a bumbling local doctor who confuses him with another patient; and visitors who pop in unexpectedly. Because Whiteside does not want his secretary to leave him, he convinces a friend to steal the reporter's affection. When he realizes how distraught he has made his secretary, Whiteside tries to remedy the situation and asks for help from another friend, Banjo (Gene Kelly). Includes commercials.
