LUX RADIO THEATRE: A TALE OF TWO CITIES (RADIO)
Summary
One in this dramatic anthology series which presents radio adaptations of motion pictures featuring Hollywood stars, often in roles they originated on screen. Host Frank Craven introduces this show, which is based on the movie version of Charles Dickens's classic novel. In Paris in 1793 during the Reign of Terror, Sydney Carton (Orson Welles) explains why he is in jail awaiting the guillotine in place of Charles Darnay (Dennis Green). His narrative flashes back to England many years earlier, when the two men, who closely resemble each other, meet while Carton is defending Darnay from a treason charge. Darnay marries Lucie Manette (Rosemary De Camp), whom Carton also loves. Later, Darnay, who long ago renounced his noble title, is arrested in Paris and sentenced to the guillotine for the "crime" of noble birth. Out of love for Lucie, Carton takes Darnay's place and dies. After the drama, Craven interviews Welles and De Camp, and discusses the following week's show. Includes commercials for Lux soap, and a public service announcement urging listeners to write to soldiers and to speed delivery by using V-Mail.
