LUX RADIO THEATRE: JANE EYRE (RADIO)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series which presents radio adaptations of motion pictures featuring Hollywood stars, often in roles they originated on screen. Producer and host Cecil B. DeMille introduces this program, based on the film version of Charlotte Bronte's novel "Jane Eyre," set in nineteenth-century England. Jane Eyre (Loretta Young) leaves the harsh orphanage where she grew up to become a governess at Thornfield Hall. She falls in love with the master of Thornfield Hall, her pupil's guardian, Edward Rochester (Orson Welles), an odd, melancholy man. After hearing and witnessing strange noises and incidents in the manor, Jane realizes that someone is kept locked in Thornfield's tower. The prisoner turns out to be Rochester's insane wife, whose identity is revealed when Rochester and Jane attempt to marry. Jane flees, but returns to Rochester when his wife burns down the manor, leaving him blind and a widower. After the drama, DeMille talks to Welles and Young and tells listeners about the following week's show. Includes commercials and a PSA about housewives' contributions to the war effort.
