CAMPBELL PLAYHOUSE: THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD, PT. 2 (RADIO)

Summary

One in this weekly drama series featuring adaptations of popular and literary classics. Part two of this version of the famous mystery story by Agatha Christie. Orson Welles stars as James Shepherd, physician in the little town of Kings Abbott. Shepherd narrates the story and introduces the main characters: his sister Caroline, a maiden lady prone to gossip; Roger Ackroyd, a wealthy manufacturer; the late Mrs. Ferrers, with whom Ackroyd was in love, and who, after confessing to him that she poisoned her despised husband, has recently died of an overdose of sleeping medicine; Rafe Payton, the recently returned impoverished stepson and heir of Roger Ackroyd; Flora, Ackroyd's niece, who is in love with Rafe; Mr. Raymond, Ackroyd's private secretary; and Hercule Poirot, a consulting detective who has recently settled in the little village. While visiting the Shepherds one evening, Poirot is witness to a phone call from Parker, Ackroyd's butler, announcing that his master has been murdered. Shephard and Poirot hurry to Fenley Hall, and over the protests of the butler, who claims he never made the call, break into the study to find Ackroyd dead, stabbed with a dagger. Poirot investigates the death and uses his inimitable mental powers to discover the secrets kept hidden by the villagers, and the shocking answer to the question "Who did it?"
