SCREEN GUILD THEATRE, THE: CASABLANCA (RADIO)

Summary

One in this series of dramas featuring movie stars in adaptations of films. In this presentation of "Casablanca," Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid reprise their film roles. The drama takes place during World War II in Morocco, controlled by the collaborationist Vichy government of France. Police captain Louis Renault visits Rick's Cafe in search of two stolen letters of transit that he believes owner Rick Blaine has in his possession. The plot is complicated by the arrival of underground leader Victor Laszlo and his wife, Ilsa Lund, an ex-lover of Rick's. As the couple attempt to get hold of the letters so that they can escape from Casablanca, the flinty Rick must deal with the emotional wounds re-opened by Ilsa's arrival. Musical highlights include "As Time Goes By" and the singing of "La Marseillaise" by 200 non-collaborating Frenchmen. After the closing credits, Bergman comments briefly about the importance of the Motion Picture Relief Fund. Includes commercials and promos. (Network affiliation varies; as above, from 1939 to 1948; on NBC, from 1948 to 1950; and on ABC, from 1950 to 1951.)
