LUM AND ABNER (RADIO)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series which takes place in Pine Ridge, Arkansas. In this episode, it's the night of one of Lum and Abner's big sociables and there is a large crowd in the schoolhouse. Lum is in charge of the entertainment. The Pine Ridge String Band plays a set and then a group of Swiss yodelers entertains the folks. Special guest Larry Adler plays a song on the mouth organ followed by George Harchick, who sings "Home on the Range." Lum introduces Two Men and a Maid, who sing "She's Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage" in traditional and modern arrangements. Abner interrupts Lum's pleasant conversation with actress Frances Langford, who then favors the audience with a song. Next up is the Pine Ridge Quartet, who sing "Juanita." Lum persuades Larry Adler to play another number, "Stormy Weather," after which a newcomer to the community sings a number. After much pleading, Abner finally gets to sing his solo, "By the Shade of the Old Apple Tree" but so many of the audience begin to leave that Lum brings up Miss Langford to sing another solo. The Pine Ridge String Band ends the evening with a rousing performance.
