PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT VISIT TO MEXICO WITH PRESIDENT CAMACHO {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- SPANISH} (RADIO)

Summary

This program centers on the visit of United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Mexico in 1943. It briefly chronicles the president's trip and then moves on to coverage of speeches given at a dinner in Monterrey. Listeners eventually learn that the visit is historic -- the first time American and Mexican presidents have met face to face in more than 30 years, and the first time ever that an American president has journeyed to the interior of Mexico. In the first speech, in Spanish, Mexican President Manuel Avila Camacho welcomes his northern neighbor. President Camacho greets the president and first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and expresses his satisfaction with their visit. He dwells on the strength of the friendship between the two nations, stressing the idealistic principles they share. He moves on to a discussion of World War II, emphasizing the role of the people both on the front and at home. Finally, President Camacho praises the valor displayed by young American soldiers, whom he characterizes as fighting against evil. He notes that this valor evokes a sense of continental pride, and he extends his hand in friendship and cooperation. The American president's speech in English to the Mexican people follows. In it Roosevelt also stresses the two nations' shared beliefs, pointing out that their common heritage of independence unites them in their struggle against the Axis powers. He emphasizes inter-American cooperation, praising the Mexican people and leaders on a number of counts -- for their brotherhood to U.S. troops in battle, for their production of materials for the war effort, for the farm workers they contribute to U.S. agricultural production, and for the ideas and moral values they bring to the shared table with their northern neighbors. He expresses the hope that the cooperation and neighborliness of the war effort will continue when the fighting is over, and he promises that the exchange of resources between the two countries will never again be one sided. He finishes by saying that he hopes that such meetings as this one will recur "again and again and again." At the conclusion of Roosevelt's speech, the dinner resumes, and NBC News coverage switches back to New York. There, after the national anthems of both countries are played, an announcer reads an English summary of Camacho's remarks.
