MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO LISTENING SERIES, THE:
A SALUTE TO SCOTT MUNI

Summary

Scott Muni (1930-2004), known as "Scottso" and "the Professor" by musicians, industry peers, friends, and fans alike, was a rock 'n' roll radio pioneer. Muni was a free-form rebel who broke away from the rigid constrictions of Top 40 radio by introducing his audience to everything from the deep blues of Robert Johnson to the new wave sounds of the Clash and the hard-edged energy of Nirvana. The raspy, rich, and distinctive voice of Scott Muni had a strong presence in New York radio for five decades. He started with Top 40 radio stations WMCA and WABC in the sixties and then went to New York's first commercial free-form radio station, WOR-FM, in the seventies. From there he twenty-plus years at WNEW-FM, where he served as an announcer and program director. From 1998 until January 2004, Muni found a home with classic-rock station WAXQ-FM. In addition, Muni used his vast knowledge of music to touch lives beyond New York City -- during his career, he hosted such syndicated radio programs as "Ticket to Ride" and "Scott Muni's World of Rock."
