MORNING EDITION {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (RADIO)

Summary

This tape presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as aired on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition." The tape begins at 9:00 a.m. as anchor Bob Edwards reads from a list of stories that will air on today's episode. "Confucius is making a comeback in Beijing," Edwards starts, before getting interrupted by reporter Carl Kasell, who states that it appears that a plane has flown into New York's World Trade Center. Edwards promises to deliver more news on this story as it becomes available, but in the meantime he turns the show over to reporter Fred Thys, who discusses a special election occurring this day in the most Irish-American district in the country, located in Massachusetts. Edwards then reads off headlines about First Lady Laura Bush's talk on education in Washington, D.C., and Secretary of State Colin Powell's visit to Lima, Peru, to discuss drug surveillance. Nora Raum provides the latest headlines about the stock market, and Edwards says that a World Trade Organization meeting is scheduled to begin today in Geneva. After twenty-two minutes have passed, the program revisits the story of the plane crash at the World Trade Center as Edwards announces that another airplane has crashed into the Twin Towers. He talks to Kerry Nolan from New York affiliate station WNYC on the telephone, and Nolan describes what she has seen from her home in New York City. Edwards notes that President George W. Bush has referred to the crashes as a terrorist attack, and he plays a brief speech from the president, taped at Booker Elementary School in Florida. After Bush's speech, Tom Gjelten reports that there has also been an explosion at the Pentagon building. Edwards then reads that Jon Myers, inventor of the supermarket-checkout price scanner, has died.
