WCBS-AM COVERAGE OF TERRORIST ATTACKS {TERRORIST
ATTACKS} {TAPE 3 OF 3} (RADIO)
Summary
Continued from R:21827. Tape three of three. This
broadcast presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on
WCBS-AM. This coverage begins at 12:00 noon EDT on
September 11. The anchors on the broadcast are Pat
Carroll and Jeff Caplan. As the tape begins, reporter
Christopher Glenn recaps the morning's events (recaps
are given periodically throughout the broadcast), and
correspondent Pamela McCall describes what she saw
downtown after the attacks. A reporter states that the
hijacked airplanes have been identified as American
Flight 11, United Flight 175, American Flight 77, and
United Flight 93. Reporter Tom Foty reports on the
situation in Washington, noting that President George W.
Bush is on his way back from Florida, and another
reporter explains that the Pentagon is still on fire.
Osama bin Laden is described as the top suspect in
planning the attacks. Terrorism expert Harvey Kushner
comments on the United States' underestimation of the
power of terrorists. Howard Ehrenstein recaps the day's
events, and correspondent Carol Marin describes the
collapse of one of the towers. Reporter Sean Adams
describes his escape from the debris of the first tower
when it fell. Reporter Mary Gay Taylor describes the
search for survivors. Steve Kafen reports that airports
and major landmarks around the country have been
closed. Reporter Marla Diamond shares the story of a
man who worked on the seventy-third story of one of the
towers, and a reporter at La Guardia Airport describes
the confusion there. Mayor Rudy Giuliani speaks to
Carroll and Caplan via telephone, explaining that at
present the city's focus is on rescue work, and Governor
George Pataki discusses the emergency teams in New
York City. The anchors report that the Taliban
leadership in Afghanistan has condemned the attacks on
the United States and claimed that bin Laden could not
be responsible. President Bush is reported as having
landed at an Air-Force base in Louisiana. In a
statement, Bush talks of finding those responsible for
the attacks and discusses new security measures. Next,
in downtown Manhattan, reporter Allison Keyes describes
the "wall of smoke" where the Twin Towers stood.
Correspondent Chris Majette gives a traffic report, and
Chris Keating reports on the closing of Newark Airport.
Producer Alan Statsky, who is in Rockland County,
describes what he can see of New York from that
northern vantage point. Major General John Melville of
the State Police is interviewed next; he emphasizes the
ongoing rescue mission. Another survivor tells his
story. Caplan and Carroll interview terrorism expert
Robert Friedman, who suggests that authorities should
be cautious about assigning blame for the attacks before
assembling all the facts. Next, a reporter explains
that some New Yorkers are beginning to worry about the
restrictions grocery stores have placed on purchases and
the lack of goods that may follow the shutdown of
transportation into the city. Finally, Marla Diamond
describes the throngs of people who have walked long
distances uptown to get home. Includes commercials.
