LONG JOHN NEBEL SHOW, THE {FINAL SHOW} {ROBERT ANDERSON} (RADIO)

Summary

One in this radio series of all-night talk shows, noted for its lively, topical discussions sparked by host Long John Nebel. This, the show's final broadcast, is hosted by Nebel's wife Candy Jones, and features playwright Robert Anderson as well as sculptor/caricaturist Arnold Bergere and writer/lecturer Jim Mosley. This portion of the show begins with calls from the listening audience questioning Anderson about his play "Tea and Sympathy." He discusses how much time he devoted to the play before and after its run on Broadway, the process of turning it into a movie and the different role a playwright has in casting both these vehicles, the story behind getting Deborah Kerr to perform in the play, and the variations between her interpretation of the role and that of Ingrid Bergman's performance in Paris. Callers then express their ideas concerning what love should be, and Anderson explains that marriage is not just an extension of courtship, but a combination of both sentiment and sensibility. The guests then talk about living together before marriage, unusual marriage practices in certain towns in Holland, and the recent trend to consider marriage a dangerous risk. Next, Jones reminisces about her marriage to Nebel and relates a couple of comical anecdotes, including one about their wedding night involving a caftan, a wig, sparklers, and popcorn. Responding to more calls from the audience, Anderson expounds on the final scene in "Tea and Sympathy" and the extent to which it is based on reality, and tells a funny story about translating the last line of the play into French. He then touches on the topics of polygamous relationships, shifting priorities in two career marriages, men feeling threatened by successful and ambitious women, and how people change during the course of a marriage. Includes public service announcements.

(This series began in 1956 on WOR-AM, and later moved to WNBC-AM and WMCA-AM. His wife, Candy Jones, continued the show after his death in 1978.)
