RUSSIAN HOUR {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- RUSSIAN} (RADIO)
Summary
One in this series of news programs for Russian speakers in the New York area. The program begins with a weather and traffic report, plus a brief classical music break in which the Belgrade Symphony Orchestra is heard playing Rossini's "William Tell Overture." The first news segment covers a number of topics, including the crash of a South Korean Airlines plane; increasing fear of terrorist acts in the New York subway; the ongoing investigation of "dormant" Jewish Swiss bank accounts from the World War II era; an announcement that the 1997 federal budget has decreased; and Congressional investigations of misuse of campaign funds. Vladimir Nadein explains the details of campaign finance. Next, Boris Grebenschikov is heard performing the song "Greetings, Death!" Brebenschikov is the leader of the music group Aquarium from St. Petersburg. The program then shifts to a memorial piece about novelist William S. Burroughs, described as the last ideologist of the beatnik movement, who died four days earlier. Anchor Lana Glaz speaks with the Russian translator of Burroughs's "Naked Lunch," scholar and journalist Yaraslav Lagutin. Another news segment follows, including such topics as the discovery of the black box of the Korean Airlines plane; the conflict between the Islamic Taliban movement and anti-Talib forces in Afghanistan; ongoing negotiations to revive the peace process in northern Ireland; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's promise to ease sanctions against the Palestinians; the election of a new premier in the Cambodian Parliament, former minister of foreign affairs Ung Huot; the swearing in of Hugo Banzer as president of Bolivia; the commemoration in Hiroshima, Japan, of the bombardment of that city fifty-two years ago; a proposed bridge between Buenos Aires and the Uruguayan city of Colonia; and the huge crowds awaiting Garth Brooks's free concert in New York's Central Park. Astrologer Esmerelda speaks next, relaying her predictions for the week. Following this, listeners hear Egor Zhelezny live in the studio, singing "Soul of My Living Soul." The singer, a Presbyterian minister, wrote the song. Zhelezny, the host of a radio program titled "In Search of Truth," is interviewed about his faith and his conversion from Judaism to Christianity. Next, the program provides a lighter touch with a story about cross-dressers and an interview with one cross dresser. The song "You Are a Woman, I Am Your Man" by Bad Boys Blue closes the segment. More news follows, including the consecration of the new Boris and Gleb Church in Moscow by Boris Yeltsin and Russian Patriarch Alexey II; a meeting of youth organizations and state bodies in Minsk to discuss the upcoming Youth Forum in Moscow; a meeting between North Ossetia President Galazov and Russian President Yeltsin and Prime Minister Chernomyrdin to discuss the conflict between Ossetia and Ingushetia; the proposal of Russian defense minister Sergeev that the government create a council of veterans of the army and navy; and NATO Secretary General Javier Solana's visit to the ancient town of Vladimir, near Moscow. Rafaella Carra is then heard in a Spanish tango song. Next, correspondent Vladimir Khalemsky reports from Israel on the current relations between that country and both Lebanon and the Palestinians. The program then provides a review of the latest issue of the Russian newspaper Forverts. The next segment of the program marks the anniversary of the death of the Russian poet Alexander Block. Poet and journalist Vladimir Norkin discusses Block's life and work, and Josef Kobson is heard performing a segment of the song "Russia," based on a poem by Block. The program then listens in on a conversation between journalists Igor Afanasiev and Matvey Narodetsky about a new radio program on Russian independent radio titled "Moscow's Echo," in which listeners can call and sing Russian songs on the air. The musical theme is extended with a discussion between "Russian Hour" correspondent Oleg Frish and Russian-American composer Larissa Kritsker about American culture, show business, and the challenges of writing songs in English. Kritsker's song "When I Remember You" is then heard, performed by Russian singer Elena Kamburova. Finally, a fragment of the musical program "Guess" is heard. At the end of the tape, commercials in English and the very beginning of a program about the Jewish Nine Days appear. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
(This program is in Russian with some English.)
