TRIBUTE TO MURRAY "THE K," A (RADIO)

Summary

This WNEW-FM tribute honors legendary New York radio personality Murray Kaufman (Murray "the K"), who recently died after a long battle with cancer. Interviews with radio personalties, footage of Murray Kaufman's work, and music are intermingled in an homage to the deejay who became known as the "fifth Beatle" and was a leader of the progressive radio movement of the late 1960s. Highlights include the following segments: audio clips of Murray "the K" reading news and weather reports; a 1981 WNEW interview with Kaufman, who discusses his "mystery bits" which introduced a song in an unusual way; Kaufman doing a commercial for the Palisades Amusement Park; a portion of Kaufman's night show at WINS; Kaufman's recollections of how he became Murray "the K" in 1958; a discussion of his offbeat style and "chants"; Dennis Elsas's memories of growing up in the early 1960s listening to Murray "the K" and his belief that he became a deejay because of the influence of people like Murray "the K"; footage of one of Kaufman's "all-star reviews" in which Dionne Warwick is heard singing "Walk on By"; a discussion of the marathon all-star reviews at the Brooklyn Fox and Paramount theaters; how he came up with his show title "The Swinging SoirŽe"; Murray "the K" as the "fifth Beatle"; Kaufman's interview with the Beatles on the set of "A Hard Day's Night" in which he asks John Lennon to read a poem; Scott Muni's memories of working with Kaufman at the beginning of the progressive era; deejay Dave Herman's recollections of how Murray "the K" helped start him in radio and a segment of Herman's recent interview with Kaufman in which he discusses The Who's first concert appearance with him; recollections of deejay Pete Fornatale and Dick Clark; and a clip of Kaufman saying he is most proud of his move to WOR-FM and of his starting a new concept in radio. The following records, among others, are heard in their entirety during this tribute: "Rock 'n Roll Radio" (The Ramones); "She Loves You" (The Beatles); "My Generation," and "The Kids Are Alright" (The Who). Includes commercials and promos. Commercials deleted.
