PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PATRICIA ARQUETTE: MEDIUM COOL {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media in New York. This evening honors "Medium," a supernatural dramatic series inspired by the real-life story of research medium Allison Dubois, a wife and mother who struggles to make sense of her dreams and visions of death. David Bushman, Paley Center television curator, offers opening remarks. He then introduces a screening of the episode "A Person of Interest" which is screened in its entirety. (For episode synopsis and credits, see "Medium: A Person of Interest," ACCNUM 100618.) Following the screening, moderator Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review columnist, introduces cast member Patricia Arquette (Allison DuBois), who also directed "A Person of Interest."
Arquette addresses topics which include: what made her want to direct; Allison's nocturnal wardrobe; why Arquette came to empathize with her directors; the reason that scripts are delivered last-minute to the cast; what caused Arquette to cast her son, Enzo Rossi, in a crucial role in "A Person of Interest"; Arquette's regrets as a director; why Arquette spoke to her editor "like an animal"; and if Arquette wants to direct again.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: if Arquette was "objective" as a director since she starred in the episode; tips that Arquette picked up from working with director Martin Scorsese on "Bringing Out the Dead" in 1999; if Arquette had trouble directing her colleagues; Arquette's relationship with the girls who play Allison's daughters; how much of the real-life DuBois's personality has rubbed off on Arquette; how Arquette was chosen for the role; if any of DuBois's actual cases are used in scripts; the roles which helped Arquette realize she had the ability to play Allison; the running theme on the show which proves "the bane" of (Arquette's) existence"; if Arquette believes in psychics; how Arquette accounts for her chemistry with on-screen husband Jake Weber; what it was like to work with siblings Rosanna, David, and Richmond on episodes of "Medium"; and why she never reprised her role from "Nightmare on Elm Street III."
