PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE THE WRITERS ROOM: PUSHING DAISIES {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Inside the Writer's Room seminars in Los Angeles. This evening focuses on "Pushing Daisies," a fantasy-based drama series about a pie-maker whose touch can revive the dead. Becky Levikow (associate director of development, The Paley Center for Media, Los Angeles) offers opening remarks. Next, executive producer/creator/writer Bryan Fuller introduces a screening of the episode "Oh Oh Oh ... It's Magic." (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 101451.)
Kristin Dos Santos (reporter, E! Entertainment) moderates, and introduces the panelists: Fuller; writers Jim Gray, Lisa Joy, and Abby Gewanter; story editors Dara Creasey and Chad Creasey; executive story editor Kath Lingenfelter; producer Davey Holmes; co-executive producers Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg; and executive producer Peter Ocko.
The panelists touch on such topics as: the initial pitch meeting to Warner Brothers; how writers find "unique" plotlines for each script; if ABC officials have indicated that the show will have a third season; staffers' reactions to displays of fans' love for the show; why writing for the series is especially challenging; if characters from Fuller's previous series "Wonderfalls" will appear on "Daisies"; whether Ned and Chuck will ever touch; future script twists; plans for a CD to be released of the show's music; future guest stars; and if changes were made to the show due to budgetary restrictions.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: how the show's distinctive tone is maintained; writers' ideas for scripts that have yet to materialize; feedback from network censors; the process for "breaking" a story; obscure movies like "Pete's Dragon" and "Savannah Smiles," as well as Alfred Hitchcock classics, which have inspired an episode's script; why characters speak at such a fast clip; why having numerous women writers on staff has "bettered" the series; if the literary genre of "magical realism" has manifested itself in the program's heightened color scheme; and how fans can get closure to unresolved storylines if a third season isn't ordered.
