UGLY BETTY: GRIN AND BEAR IT (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series about Betty Suarez, a young Queens woman trying to make it in the fashion industry despite her unglamorous appearance.

In this episode, Betty is singled out for criticism in her new writing class by a surly professor. Upon returning home, she tells Ignacio and Hilda of her treatment until an out-of-control Justin interrupts. Continuing to emulate his late father, Justin announces that he doesn't care about having failed a math test. As a result, Betty goes to work and asks Henry to tutor him. Also at Mode, Daniel assists Alexis as she returns to the office, despite her ongoing memory loss since the accident. At a staff meeting, Alexis makes a fool of herself, after which she tells Daniel that she should quit.

Later, Wilhelmina approaches Bradford about her upcoming position with Meade Publications. A series of unsatisfactory meetings with Meade magazines' various editors causes her to tell Marc that she'll sabotage Mode if she can't become its editor. Elsewhere, Amanda informs Marc that -- in attempting to discover her father's identity -- she's going through old issues of Mode to see if he was photographed at a party with Fey. Upon earning Christina's encouragement about her writing abilities, Betty returns to class and is instructed to read her homework essay aloud. However, she mistakenly begins to read a story in her briefcase which had been submitted to Mode, earning her teacher's instant kudos and the students' applause. A horrified Betty is then told by her teacher that he's going to get "her" work published.

The next day, Daniel meets with potential advertiser Luke Carnes. Luke is willing to advertise heavily in Mode, but only if Daniel fires Alexis. Luke then explains that he can't have his backers involved with a magazine run by a transsexual co-editor. Later, Daniel reluctantly admits to Alexis that he turned down the account because of her. Wilhelmina pretends to back Daniel on the decision, though she uses Luke's lack of participation to encourage other advertisers to desert Mode. Wilhelmina tells Marc that if Mode goes under, she can start her own fashion magazine. Elsewhere, Amanda finds a picture from the '80s of Fey's mousy assistant, Wanda, and recognizes it to be Wilhelmina. When Wilhelmina catches Amanda with the photo, she gets a promise of Amanda's silence in exchange for disclosing that an unidentified man with a Tweety Bird tattoo impregnated Fey, and is thus Amanda's father. After explaining that her supermodel makeover was paid for by Fey in exchange for keeping quiet about the baby, Wilhelmina gives Amanda a list of the party guests in attendance when Fey became pregnant.

Across town, Betty meets with the man chosen by her professor to publish the article. Betty insists that if it surfaces in any magazine other than Mode, she'll be fired. Betty then returns to Mode, where she finds the article's real author in her office, threatening to sue over Betty's false claims of ownership. Daniel steps in and offers to pay double for the article to be printed in Mode, then lectures Betty on having lied to her professor. Later, Alexis thanks Daniel for coming to her defense, after which he admits that he was the cause of her accident-induced amnesia. Alexis chooses to forgive him. Finally, Henry walks into Betty's house and finds a drunk Justin making out with a scantily clad girl on the couch. Henry chastises him, then reports his actions to Betty. Henry also blurts out that the paternity test's results show that he is the father of Charlie's baby. A saddened Betty asks Henry to leave before returning to her writing class, where she exposes her deception and reads her own story. Includes commercials.
